I purchased a '05 FXST Softail w/carb. The guy installed high flowair filter element (Harley cone shaped) used with OE cover. He also has stock pipes with baffles removed. He said he had the dealer make carb adjustments, but when I first took it out to ride 45 degrees it wouldn't stay running without some choke (even at full temp)and coughed through carb (lean for sure). I recently adjusted the idle mixture. Its at a little over two turns out and seems pretty close. Plugs are black at edges insulators very light tan. No manifold leaks.

Anyway, Did anyone else make the same changes to filter and pipes and have to rejet ?
Bike still seems a tad lean, once in a while when I blip the throttle it coughs/stalls and a little white smoke comes out of carb...lean ??
No black or dark smoke from exhaust but it kinda smells strong or rich at idle....normal or not for a HD?
I didn't want to take apart carb unless I had to. So not sure what jets are in there.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You really need to rejet after filter AND pipe change. Every one does it alittle differant. Look at the self help section. It has loads of info! Rejetting a Harley is simple. Took me longer to get the s.s bands of the fuel hose than any thing. Ha If you need specific help just ask!
