Default Popping noise when throttle off

I just bought my first bike, A 2001 RK Classic with 5800 miles. It came with slip on exhaust in a box. I installed them and noticed that it seems to make a popping noise when i let off the throttle. Not a lot but it is noticed. Is this normal? What should i do about it? The bike has FI by the way.

HDs run lean and when you open up the exhaust and intake they run leaner. You need to richen your fuel air mixture. If you are not planning any major performance mods, a RevTech DFO or Techlusion TFI can add some fuel to get rid of the popping for a minimal cost.

Can get cheap on ebay or from Forum sponsor EP.

I used one when I had a Stage I engine, but now use a SERT with my Stage III.

Before you get too involved, check around the new slip ons and make sure that you don't have a leak. If you're sure that they are tight then start checking for a lean condition.
Good luck.

My wife said she thought could hear a small ticking noise from the right exhaust where the slip on clamp goes. Could this be where the problem is? I dont recall there being any popping from the stock exhaust. And, the stock pipes were a bear to remove.

Did you put any grease on the pipes when installed them? Dry pipe to dry pipe will usually leak a little... this leak can make a slight pop depending on the location. The closer to the exhaust valve it is the higher the risk of damage to the valve. But it sounds like a combination problem...
1) bike is now running lean. Stock FI map with free flow pipes... need a re-map or aftermarket fix
2) exhaust slip-ons are leaking a little and gives off a cold air pop at the leak.. needs a re-install with the grease

Do this and it should fix it. Good luck and keep us posted...

I wnt to the shop last week. The mechanic said the exhaust was called Thunderhead or something like that. He said there was no way to get rid of all the popping noise due to several factors. The year of the bike, the desighn of the exhaust. I put the stock pipes back on. I will get used the sound. My wife and kids like the stock sound anyway. Since they ride on the back i'll go with it.
