Default Random starting grind test & advice on Ring Gear kits 84/10 (Rivera, Compufire..)

Hi guys!

I open this thread to see if some of you could shed some light on the matter, both on possible causes and a possible replacement kit I mention below.

As I keep having an ocassional random grind when starting the bike, Iīve decided opening the primary when I have some free time and and find a space, and see which kind of ring gear and pinion gear I got installed by a mechanic three years ago, when he replaced a brand new strong starter motor I gave him, besides those two parts, wich he ordered himself.

At first try, he actually returned a first pinion gear he wrongly ordered and installed a second one (different model), thatīs why Iīm no so much confident about what is actually installed (I believe parts from Drag Specialties).

Will check the following:

- Number of teeth on both ring gear and pinion gear. I imagine this is ok, as if not the start would have been a nightmare from first day.

- If they correctly adjusted the air gap between the ring gear and the pinion gear: anywhere between .075 - .125 inch.

- Maybe he torqued the jackshaft bolt too much and cause this?

The problem actually happened from day one after installation by the mechanic, but so rarely that it coulnīt be reproduced often. Seemed to hide in presence of others ;-) Now itīs happening slightly more often, but a very annoying noise occurs when it happens.

When it happens, most of the times it slightly hits and starts the engine in one movement, other times hits and second try starts nice and strong.

Seems like some kind of misalignment is happening, as battery is ok and always starts nice and strong. Maybe the airgap between the ring gear and pinion gear is not good?

If I canīt find the problem and keeps happening, Iīm thinking on terminating the problem and installing a 10/84 Gear Conversion Kit from Rivera, Compu Fire, etc.

- Is it better to change just the pinion of the full jackshat? if so, standard type (ex. Rivera Primo) or one piece (All *****)

Any thoughts or experiences with any of those? Any advice of what else to try?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Cheers!

Sounds like a bad starter clutch.

Default problem occured next day after service.

Your three years too late .

If any related problem occurs within a system that was worked on at a dealership you must advise them asap and return the vehicle within 30 days to have the problem corrected under your service warrenty.

It sounds like you are going through.
The starter drive gear hitting the starter ring gear and not slipping into place.

Mine was doing that through 3 starters so I doubt it is your starter clutch.

One of the teeth finally broke off of the starter drive gear and I replaced it with a 10/84 starter ring gear and drive gear set from Rivera Primo.

No problems since then but it has only been a couple months.

Thanks for your answers, guys!

Sounds exactly like that, texashillcountry... Let's see if I find a solution like yours :-)

@machinehed: it wasn't the official dealer, after the initial installation, I came back and that's when they changed the pinion gear the second time for another model.

You're right about the guarantee, but as the mechanic that did the job the first time was leaving and it happened very rarely, didn't trusted the mechanic that kept the problem going the second time a third one...

@Beemervet: it happened with a brand new starter motor.

If I were you I would go ahead and get the 10/84 set from Rivera Primo as when I broke off that tooth I was 80 miles from home and had to stop and get gas on the way.
Needless to say I didn't shut off the motor while pumping the gas!!!

Wow... Hahaha, the gas station sounds like a Mad Max scene, can't imagine the surprise face of the gas station guy :-)

So you would go directly for the kit? I'll check tomorrow the exact Rivera kit number that I need, too late here now. Any quality difference among Rivera & Compu Fire kits?

I don't know the answer to that question.
The Rivera Primo was recommended to me by a local indy.

Seems like a good deal, is the kit you mounted, Texas?

Rivera Primo Ring Gear Conversion Kit 1171-0002

Need one for locking the jackshaft pinion gear:
