Default 98 road king clutch pack

98 Road King will be a sticky soon enough... LOL!!!

Anyway I posted this in touring, in another thread, since the 98 uses the same clutch pack a the twinkie, but let me share my grief and if possible some of you can impart your experience and wisdom.

I purchased the SE Clutch kit part# 37980-10
Comes with 9 friction discs and 8 steel plates. Directions call out to remove the damper spring and seat, and not to reuse the stock steel discs but to use the ones included in the kit.

The steel plates do not slide on, they catch. No all of them, just some of them. I am going to return them or file them...

I may use some of the stock plates.

Does anyone know what should the stack height be? There must be an min and a max? Or is it that critical? As long as the clutch pack doesnt hit the inspection cover, and you can adjust it I would think you could add plates and steel discs. ( or remove discs ) The SE kit measured at 1.856 and BDL lists there kits at 1.840-1.855. I figure as long as I am in the ballpark I am good.

Any insight on this? Am I totally off the mark here?

I measured the disks and they are .144-.150 ( vary ) the steels are .061 The stock steels are .062 and the stock disks are wasted.

Just use the number of discs that come in the pack and don't sweat the numbers....

Nothing wrong with the stock parts but the upgraded spring is worth it if going over 100HP...I ran stock with a Barnett spring on a 101HP TC with no issues whatsoever.
