Did the bike start up imediately after putting in the first gal from AAA? How did it run, did it seem happy? If your bike starts to exhibit problems at right about the same fuel level in the tank, you may have a clogged petcock screen. Have you removed it for inspection yet?

Nah, not at all! Everyone's wondered the same thing at one point. I always fill the right side first, then the left, as the right side's higher on the side stand. My left cap overflows if I fill too high and I've found that filling in this order helps keep that from happening.

Fill the left side first and put the cap back on, then fill the right.
The right tank is higher than the left tank when the bike is on the jiffy stand.
If you fill the right tank first, then the left you better not waste any time getting the gas cap back on, as the fuel level will still be rising after you stop pumping fuel because the fuel level in the right tank is above the level of the left side gas cap.
When the tanks are full, do not remove the left gas cap.
After you get back on the road, re tighten the caps.
