By "mess" I mean holed pistons, seizures and burnt valves.

Well, that idea won't work until my son gets home. No access to the plug wires on my wife's 2013 or my 2012.

I would think the bike wouldn't be running to well if that kind of damage was occurring. Right?

Surprisingly enough they can appear to be running OK until they **** themselves at WOT.

Nah, I already told him about a trusted and very affordable Indy. TD is
1) the I can do it better and cheaper myself type ( flashback to a a friend pounding in a forkleg on the pavement)
2)under the Spanner spell but just not quite getting it
3)too skeered too change his loafers for riders boots
4)too stubborn about fixing his own chit

Ay, it ain't up to me to judge. Ya still have another six months of riding this year. GiddyUp cowboy!

I have a dial back timing light, it's so much easier to use than the non-dial ones. I just use the dial feature to find the mark, then see where the timing is by looking at the dial. In combination with a vacuum gauge and a tach, it works well for testing vacuum and centrifugal advance too. Worth buying, it's so much easier to use.

Of course most of my work these days is on my Vette, where I adjust timing by scanning with my computer and changing it with a few keystrokes in very specific areas where indicated by the knock sensors. Technology...ain't it grand.

Whatever. You must be one of the:

1. I'm too lazy to try to fix it myself kind of guy.

2. Don't have the guts or mental capacity to try.

But thanks for words of encouragement.
