I think the one advantage of the non-waste-spark systems is you can adjust the timing individually, at least with some systems. "I've heard" people say that retarding the rear cylinder 3 degrees is helpful. Never tried it myself, and that was with top fuel drag bikes, so may or may not apply to a street bike.

Thanks Doc, the reason I brought this up was my timing is now fairly retarded to keep from a barely audible slight ping at 3000rpm under wot. My thought being with an adjustable ignition, I could get a more "advanced timing" with the adj timing curves.

Well, depending on what you have now for an ignition and what you have done to the bike, that can lead to pinging. A fully programable ignition curve on a custom built high compression motor would be a good thing. You wouldn't necessarily need the individually fired stuff, just programable.

I havnt really had a ping problem unless I try to advance the timing, then it's very minimal hardly audible. It's, 80", EV27, heads built & shaved, 10.1, Dyna S ignition. ETC.
So I believe the better adj ignition would be benefit. It runs great now but I think it can do better in terms of advancing without ping.

That 10:1 on an air cooled motor can lead to pinging, certainly. Even the factory motors that were 10:1 pinged. Of course, premium gas only. Does that Dyna S use the VOES? Is that working? Are there different curves or retard settings available for that ignition?

Well thank you for asking this question. I was thinking sorta of the same but on stock bike.

I only use premium gas and my Indy took off the VOES, said I didn't need it. I never get any ping below 3000 rpm so I don't think the Voes an issue. Idle & starts are great, Take off from dead stop is very quick, no stumble on throttle snap. The Dyna S has no adjustments besides rotating it Advance-retard.

I think a stock engine you wont need an adjustable ignition. JMHO.

I think with everything discussed, The adj. ignition could give me more advanced setting without the 3000 rpm jingle. which would squeeze better performance and a happier engine.
