Default So, what can happen if my primary chain is too tight.

Sorry I meant Primary chain.....

I went in to check the tension, and the chain was WAY too floppy.

I moved the tensioner a click, and now it seems too tight.

Did it several times, but couldn't get it "just right."

WTHeck?

So loose its slapin the case? Id go loose before I go so tight its wiping oit bearings. Loose and tight are subjective though. I ran into this with my Baker primary shoe and left it on the loose side and kept an eye on it.

It will whine and tear up bearings if too tight. The chain gets shorter as it gets hot, so loose is better.

take out the plugs - rotate the motor around counterclockwise using the 1 1/2 inch nut on the front sprocket --- couple inches at a time and majic mark in the center between the clutch hub and motor sprocket -- the tightest spot on the chain in the circle of turning - < that is the adjustment spot < adjust it so it has some ( some ) loose play up and down -

re do what you have adjusted and see if what was the tight spot stayed in the same place and it still has up and down free play == johnjzjz

That is one thing I never understood!!!

Things expand when they heat up and shrink when they get cold.
How can the chain shrink when it heats up?????????????

Oh and don't forget that with a chain too tight the adjuster shoe gets worn down faster.

Yea, it's not intuitive. All I can figure is the bearings and such inside the rollers expand and draw the chain links closer together. I can picture it in my mind, but the explanation will have to come from someone smarter than me. Maybe Spanners has an understandable explanation.

I don't have a manual in front of me, but there should be a measurement of slack that you're shooting for when adjusting. On Shovels/Pans I use a machinist ruler and shoot for 5/8 of an inch if I'm remembering correctly...
