TD, since you went for a 50 mile ride and didn't note any whining, I'll assume it's not too tight, but did you check it when it was hoy?

Actually, the chain gets longer as it heats up. Metal expands under heat.

 

Obviously you haven't read your service manual.

I noticed the thread was 4 years old when I started, but now I'm 80 something posts in and I gotta know...did TD ever check the chain when hot???

 

Cold 5/8" - 7/8

Hot 3/8 - 5/8

This is most common for EVO's but check your FSM for your model.

I always adjust cold... after finding the tight spot I do 3/4" which is middle of the spec.

IMO too tight on the primary chain is the number one reason for a hard to find neutral.

 

The chain may get longer as it heats up, but the primary case and sprockets are heating up, too, and they heat up and expand MORE than the chain.
