just put a K&N filter in it - unless you like the way the S&S looks you dont loose anything

just my take we dynoed all of them you need lots of work in the engine before it even starts to matter -- johnjzjz

I am and have been a member of many car, truck, and bike forums, and it seems like one of the first things guys want to do to their rides is put an elaborate (and expensive) air intake system on their stock or mostly stock vehicle.
9.5 times out of 10 it is overkill. A k&n or comparable drop in filter will flow more than enough air for a mild to moderate build. Same is true for ignition, exhaust, etc. You don't need "race stuff" unless you have a "race motor".
If you just want it for aesthetics and have money to burn, then go for it. Not comin down on ya for wanting something different, just speaking the truth.

I seem to recall a couple of threads recently about air filters. If you want to retain the stock cover there are options, just as there are if you want the looks of a different style. Having owned Harleys since the 70s and read Warner Riley's articles about his escapades at Bonneville, I was sold on an S&S! Unless you have a monster motor, any aftermarket filter will work, so the world is your oyster.

motors are basically and air pump the more air you can pump through them the more power you make

increased air intake needs to be matched by a free flowing exhaust

the airfilter is just part of the package that will / will not make more power unless everything is matched

usually carb adjustments are required when air filters / exhausts are changed to maximise benefits

a mild bolt in cam like a ev27 usually wih airfilter and pipe changes yields the best bang for your buck

I used a big sucker when I converted from efi to carb as it was cheaper than a hard to find factory unit. And I could retain stock appearance.
