Default inner primary seal

Hey everyone,

Just had a question about the oring that goes between the inner primary and the engine. It looks like there was some silicone around this oring. Is this normal? Should I just be able to replace the oring and skip the silicone? Im replacing the 2 seals and the oring as the inner primary seal was leaking. Btw this is on a 94 heritage.

I've always cleaned that area well and just use the 0-ring, torqued everything properly and have never had a problem. Others have used an o-ring and silicone and still have leaks!!! So I guess the choice is yours.

I did this already this summer and it was not that big of a job. I have no leaks and there was no evidence of silicone from the previous owner so I added no silicone and have been good so far. Thank God!

tips
1. If you decide to remove the clutch hub basket that is a 1 3/16 inch left hand thread socket, was in my FLTR anyway.
2. 175 lbs of torque is fairly important but I must add that you should only use the red loctite sparingly when reassembly comes. John from Mia, a person we should all listen to, will advise you on this when the time comes. BTW, this is for the 1.5" nut on the compensator. Again, it is on my '98 fltr.
3. This is the absolute bestest time to carefully inspect your charging system. Look for Dr. Hess's sticky about that.
Good luck and I hope this helps,
Tom

remember to loosen off the gearbox and the engine mounts before you refit the inner primary and tighten it up

otherwise you may hear a very expensive ping when the inner primary decides to let go

@miacycles, Im in the process of cleaning everything up today and don't plan on using any silicone. Didn't think I needed it which is the reason for the question.

@Tee&Vee, Thanks for the info, I didn't even think about checking the charging system, so add 1 more item to the list. lol

@Ken Oaff, Never thought about loosening those items off before reinstalling the inner primary, but will definitely do that as that sounds like some insurance against having to buy a new one.

Thanks guys

I am not sure about loosening off the gearbox bolts!

If she was okay to begin with then leave well enough alone...as it must have all been lined up anyway.

Yes, you should only need to loosen them if you changed any of the "hard parts". Be sure to put some tape around the transmission shaft to protect the inner primary seal.

that's what I thought but I learnt the hard way, things tend to move over time

I would contest that statement, the primary cracks on Evo's because the tranny isn't rigid enough, fitting a race brace prevents the cracking.

Look at a TC tranny and how it mates to the crankcases and you'll see how much metal was required to stiffen the set up.
