So I noticed on J&P s website that I could either buy the whole wheel, or just the outer rim and I'm kind of wondering which way to go, I just had the bearings in my existing one redone last year so that s not a plus on getting a new rim.

Would it be really tricky to just undo the spokes from the existing rim and atatch them to the new rim? I will go talk to my indy and see what he says but I'm thinking if i have to pay them to lace the wheel it might b cheaper just to buy a new one, however if I can lace the wheel then I would go the other route. Which way would you guys suggest going??

Also, while the big dollar wheels are kind of out of the budget is there any good places to shop online other than J&P. Thanks
From what the OP said, it sounds like the rim is still holding air and running OK. I think he wants to replace it for cosmetic reasons. I disagree about relacing the wheels. It really isn't that difficult and you can easily learn to do it with just a little patience and a good truing stand. As to cost, if you can't find a decent indi to do it at a reasonable price, try some of the bicycle shops. There really isn't any difference between lacing our motorcycle wheels and a mountain bike. Thicker gauge steel that's all. Good luck,

I had this problem on another bike of mine. Couldn't find anyone in Chicago area that would repair a 21" front wire wheel. Sent the wheel to Woody's Wheel Works in Denver. They fixed it up great. Took the bend out of the rim and installed a new tire, I think they replaced a couple of spokes to for $133. I paid for the shipping.
Only place I could find to do the repair.

Good Luck

Not so sure a hammer would help, like i said the tire still holds air, but the rim is definitly not balanced right although it seems to be worse at lower speeds

here's a pic

Pretty good ding you got there!!!
Can't hurt to try.
If it doesn't work you can always replace the rim later.

I suppose it wouldnt hurt it any worse Did you put something between the hammer and the rim when you used hammers on them THC ? so you dont hit the rim directly? my biggest concerns with fixing it are 1. safety and 2. not wrecking the good tire I talked to a friend last night who says he has laced motorcycle wheels before so I am thinking I might just order the new outer rim

I just hit them with a hammer. Usually a 4 lb sledge.
Then again I have never been accused of trying to keep something pretty.

Since you have a friend to re-lace it if you don't like how it comes out it can't hurt anything to try.

It will be prettier if you just replace the rim though.

If you have your friend lace your wheel, you'll need the service manual to find the correct offset between the hub flange and the rim edge. This is necessary to have the wheel run centered.

Lacing a wheel looks harder than it is. I built both of the wheels on my bike. I did it on a card table in the living room while watching TV. I trued the wheels with a truing stand I made using scrap wood and a bicycle spoke for a "pointer". The factory manual has good instructions for how to do it.
