Default How to grease Steering Head Bearings

I was wondering how I can grease my steering head bearings on my 1989 HD Electraglide Ultra Classic.

I can't figure how to get at them with out dismantling everything. According to my owners manual this should be performed every 10,000 miles if I'm reading it correctly. Is there an easy way to do it myself?

Thanks in advance.

Go to NAPA and get a box of grease zerks, or, one with a 45 degree bend.

Remove the original zerk on the left side of the neck and insert the new 45 degree zerk. Apply grease to the zerk until you see it coming out of the neck.

You can use some rope to close off the bottom, to force grease out of the top.

You dismantle everything! Some jerks put in a zerk, then pump the steering head full of grease. I guess that's one way around it - or you could put it off for a while, like many of the rest of us do!

I have an '89 and can't find a Zerk fitting anywhere on the steering head at all. Wondering if my year doesnt have one.

No it doesn't. However when you pull it apart to grease your bearings you could install one!

I've never seen a jerk on my bike, other people have. I haven't seen a jerk either.

Its NOT an easy job on the Ultra due to the Batwing Fairing etc.
As for every 10,000 miles! Wouldnt be me unless someone has got a neat idea
on how to get round having to dismantle the fairing etc.
