In my opinion after too many years in the automotive electrical bizz. i would offer that ...
1) The starter batteries available now are not the batteries your Dad used .
2) The battery chargers are also now " intelligent " and can do things that our Dads chargers could only dream of . See the latest stuff out there .

A good intelligent battery tender and decent care will keep your AGM battery working fine for up to 10 years. I always Winter my powersport batteries in a heated basement on a battery tender, switching every week or so to a different battery, and have gotten 10 years out of a yuasa that way. A quality battery helps alot too though..avoid the Wal Mart specials.

If mine wasn't in an insulated garage I would be pulling the battery to put on the tender otherwise I just plug it in at the beginning of winter and cleanup the terminals to get ready for the new season. Cleaning your terminals will be part of your maintainance anyway.
