When it idles like a Shovelhead...potato poatato....turn it up a tad more.

I'm going to turn it up a bit tonight. There's no doubt in my mind it's idling too slow now.

Doesn't it need to be idling around 1100 to keep the oil moving properly?

Yeah, "they say" to not let it idle under 1000, as not enough oil is available under there. 650 is certainly too low.

Yea, probably is. Maybe I'll turn it up a little.

Damn.... so I either need to buy a tach.. or find a shovelhead and a twinkie in the same parking lot so I can set the idle

Lol.....

Well....like I said...my tach needle bounces so much at idle...ranges bout 500 - 1500 at idle....I just adjust by ear.
The tach smooths out when moving.

I could have thrown in an Ironhead also...but didnt want to complicate it.

One day I will be able to set the idle by ear, I can do that with my car's and truck's but that's because I have had tach's on similar motor's and have an idea of what they are reving at. on my harley I really have no idea, mine doesnt sound like a shovel at idle but when I'm riding around I really have no idea what rpm's its at kinda make's it hard to know if I should rev it up more or shift into the next gear

Yeah...the tach is handy for that.
The bike turns into a paint shaker from 1500-2000....then it smooths out...not cool to lug it all the time....I glance at it more than the speedo now....previous bike didnt have a tach either.

I don't know. Just for fun I added a switch between the VOES and the module so I can cut off the VOES. It makes it idle really slow when it retards the timing. I have pulled the crank plug and oil is blowing around in there like crazy. I don,t do it often but it is fun to do when around a bunch of Twinkies and my drag pipes are doing a really slow potato potato. At that point it sounds more like a knuckle head. Back in the Pan Head days I remember guys idling so slow you could count the cylinders firing. But, it is probably best to idle them around a 1,000.
