Checked all the grounds and cleaned them.
Had the connectors apart and put back together. All looked OK.
Think there is only one breaker on the '95 model....and if that was no good the starter wouldn't work.
As the last time it wouldn't start.....while it was still playing up I checked the voltage on the connection to the coil and there was 11.4 V......yet no spark.
I took the plunge and got a new coil (I know, I know, don't throw money at new parts), and since then have done two 12 mile trips with no break downs.
I suspect the bike is lulling me into a false sense of security! But maybe....... )

Glad you were able to get it going!
Coils go bad? (J/K)
BTW ... above, I was posting about the module while you were posting a replacement didn't make any difference. I'd rather pay the price for a coil set than an ignition module.
Some day, when you do need it ... you would really like an upgraded aftermarket ignition module.
EDIT:
It'd be nice to always find the bad part first off but the theory of starting with the least expensive part it could be sometimes pays off and sometimes cost you.
And with an older bike, throwing parts at it is never a (real) waste. You now know the condition of some critical components is in new. I consider it an investment. LOL (that's if you have the money, and if your planning on keeping the bike).
