Default Fork oil?

'89 FXSTC, anyone know how far down the tube the fork oil should be? Rebuilt the forks and added correct oz of oil according to factory service manual, seems like it's a long ways down there compared to my TC road king and my sportster.

If you have a service manual that will be in the specifications section. I NEVER use quantity as a means to measure instead opting for measuring height to be sure it is correct.

I have yet to see any manual that tells me what the height should be in forks. All I have seen is quantity of oil to put in.

OP You should use the DRY amount of fork oil if you rebuilt your forks.

How exactly does measuring the height tell you if the quantity is correct if the service manual specifies the quantity only?

I used the 11.2 oz the book called for, just seems to be further down than my other bikes.

the service manual on my 2010 fxd specifies both (measurement and fl. oz). I went off the measurement because the progressive springs I added were bulkier and displaced more oil than the oem

Use the amount the manual says, it will be fine. If the progressive springs need a different quantity it will say so in the installation instructions....and yes, its a long way down :-)

Just out of curiosity how do you check your measurement?
Do your forks have a sight glass or do you insert a stick or wire into the forks and where does your manual say the measurement should be?

Because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

My 2009 Touring Model Service Manual PN 99483-09 page 2-54, table 2-18 specifies Fork Oil Requirements as 10.7 or 11.0 ounces (quantity), 317 or 325 milliliters (quantity), 4.92 inches (height) and 125 millimeters (height).

The service manual specifies the tool to be used as PN HD-59000B or you can purchase the Motion Pro version cheaper.

Coming off of 40 years of dirt and sport bikes, suspensions are important for me. I am not satisfied with "good enough" or "it's always gonna clunk".

Believe it or not my last post was not sarcasm but true curiosity.

Your tool looks like the stick down the fork guess was the right one.
