!999 was when Mikuni changed cables. If your carb is older than that you need the old style cables, Bikers chioice and Ultima sell them for sure. If your carb is early 1999 then it could be either as many dealers had left overs. If it is newer than that it should be set for Harley cables. Hope this helps.

The HS40 was already out of production by 1999 (none of the HS40`s could use OEM cables). The early HSR42 used non OEM cables until the change in `99 as you said.

 

Thanks guy's for all the info. Special thanks to Dan89FLSTC for the part numbers, got me out of a jam. I hate to part with the HS40, it's been a great carb on my Softail.
