My pickup was missing a cylinder for some time (don't use it much, wasn't worried about it!). But when I finally changed the plugs, the buildup on the missing cylinder is just plain scary. I've never seen that kind of crap until I had to burn the corn. I have one local gas station that has ethanol free, 90 octane. My bike doesn't use anything else as I don't want that crap in my bike. My truck, well.....

Have been riding my decker for 6 years since I got her. Long trips here and there, 87 gas, whatever brand is available, most of it nowdays "up to 10% ethanol".
Stripped the top end this winter for a possible rebuild. Almost no carbon build up, no signs of detonation, no crap inside, valve job is not needed (besides obvious lapping touch ups), bores and even pistons are alright, just re-hone with new rings.
This being said, sometimes on cheap brands it would diesel a bit, but never overheated (I suspect the heads were tiny bit shaved, so the compression must be 9.5 or so)
I guess the key here is the correct engine tune up, and (I'm ready for some flak here hehe) not to abuse high octane premium gas, that actually burns slower and colder.
