I had the click that lasted a couple of years. I dealt with it because I installed the solenoid button the first time it did it. At first, a new relay would fix it, then I guess it got worse.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago. I had my bike with an indy having a few other things done, and I told him about my click. He replaced the ignition and found a few wires that were corroded up in the terminal end connectors. He replaced a few connectors and sealed up the others. PROBLEM SOLVED! FINALLY!!!!

Good luck to others still dealing with this.

i have a ‘95 flstn and need to do this. a couple questions:

1) should i splice the #85 lead from the new relay to the #87 (brown lead) from the old relay? or would it be better to add a dual male to female adapter to the #87 pin directly on the old relay? (see the adapter pic below the diag)

2) can someone confirm if the #30 pin (blue lead) on the new relay the one i need to add the 30a fuse to the battery?

The real fix is replacing 32 year old wires for my bike, but I'm too lazy for that, so the work around is good enough for me. Another relay, push a solenoid push button is enough to start the bike.
1. See the schematic of how I added the extra starter relay.
2. Yes.

What is happening that makes you think you need a second relay?

There is nothing to be gained by adding a second relay to a Softail of any year...

All you need to do is run a fused wire from the main breaker to pin 30 of the existing starter relay, and remove the existing wire.

The early Softails didn`t even use a fuse on that wire (that is how my `89 Softail has been setup since it came from the factory).

No second relay needed on Softail...

Again, all you need to do is run a wire from the silver stud on the main breaker to terminal 30 on the existing starter relay.

Disconnect the previous wire that was connected to terminal 30 (you can remove it or just coil it up and secure it as long as you cover up the end of the wire properly.

Simply wire it like an old Evo Softail...

I highlighted the new wire in red.

which one is the main breaker? A or B?

Neither....

The main breaker is mounted on the front of the rear fender extension.

just making sure, looks like this is the main breaker that is somewhat accessible from the right side of the oil bag right?
