Probably a dumb question, but where is the plunger or how do I go about getting to it to clean it? Do I need to get inside the primary?

To get to the plunger you have to take off the back of the solenoid. 3 bolts and your in. No messing with the primary.

No pics as I am at work, but you don't need to touch the primary at all, at least on my bike. On mine, there's a chrome cover on the right side of the starter held on by two nuts. Once that is off, there is a small cover held on by three screws. Pull those screws and pop that cover off and the plunger will slide right out the right side. Make sure the battery is disconnected first to avoid getting juiced or engaging the starter by accident. It's pretty easy to get to and doesn't require removing the exhaust or anything else.

Thank D1gger, Texas!

I imagine all is done inside, by first taking off the starter's solenoid push button cover (or regular starter cover if you have that) Am I right?

Cheers,

Cheers,
The pushbutton cover if you have one actually replaces the cover Texas and I are referring to. I used wheel bearing grease, but the key is something slick and a very light, thin coat. Too much and it will attract carbon and gum up over time, becoming sticky.

Ok, thanks! Yes, I've got the button. Just wanted to be sure :-)

Update:

Took plunger out and hit it with some brake cleaner and re greased. Hadn't clicked at all today. We'll see how she responds in the morning.

Still may mod the wiring. I would only need to add wire from battery to 30 post correct?

On a softtail, yeah, just add the wire to the 30 post.
