How to change a drive belt -101
Ok, here it is and I hope its adequate.
Turns out the guy with the bike (1998 Wide Glide) who is a long time biker buddy of mine is also a member of this forum and when I started taking pics he said "There's some guy on the Hd Forums, called Spanners and he said he was going to do a pictorial" Lol....small world eh?
So, first get the bike up on the stand and drain the primary fluid
It is useful to put rags under the primary at this point as its gonna get messy, how ever hard you try
And some cardboard to lay the parts on
I put Dr Phil to work removing the chain guards
Next off is the chain tensioner inspection cover
Then slacken the outer primary screws and put them in a pattern so you know which one goes where
If you put the outer primary on the cardboard oily side down, all the oil will have run off by the time you come to put it back on and its way less messy
This is what you see when the primary cover is off
Now is a good time to remove any traces of gasket from the inner primary
This is the starter jackshaft, undo the tab and remove the long bolt....take a picture or draw the assembly so it goes back in the right way around
It is also a good idea to undo the clutch adjuster at this point as you will need to readjust the clutch on reassembly
Undo the circlip and remove the adjuster plate
Followed by the clutch pushrod
Next comes the starter bolts, there are two of them and they require a "special tool" I just use a 3/8 extension and a 1/4 drive with an angle adapter taped up so it is flexible but doesn't sag
Jam the primary with a Delrin block or similar and with a long bar, undo the crankshaft nut
Here you can see the block in place and the alternator rotor
Keep the parts in order and look out for any spacers or shims that might be in there
Position the Delrin block ready to undo the clutch, do it at the crankshaft and you won't risk breaking the primary when it loads up as it can bunch the chain up against the outer edge of the inner primary if you do it at the clutch
Now go to part 2 as you can only load 20 pics per post.....
