Default pinion to cam timing?

Im kind of lost on this and dont want to screw it up. I need to get my pinion to cam timing on and was wondering how to do this. Do you just set the pinion mark up and then slide the cam in to align the marks? Do the pistons need to be in a certain position? I put it at tdc and the marks are no where close. So im wondering the above. I read the manual and cant find anything on this subject. Im trying to button this machine up tonight. Thanks

Yes, pinion mark straight up,12:00 oclock, cam mark straight down,6:00 oclock, drop the preather to line up with its mark. The pistons are in the same relative locations, every 360 degrees of rotation, so it is the cam that determines whether it is an exhaust or a compression stroke.
