Newb to Evo's with a build question
OK....so I wanted a project and ran across a mix and match Evo for a good price and picked it up.
After market softail frame, mid 80's (I think) engine and 4 speed transmission with a kicker. Final drive was chain.
Completely disassembled and had frame blasted and painted. Engine is cleaned and back in the frame. After cleaning I can find no Harley marks on the engine case anywhere. So I have to assume that it is an aftermarket engine case. Left top of case is stamped "THUNDERxxxxxxx".
I do not want to go back to the final chain drive....want to do the belt.
Can someone assist in helping identify approximate year of engine?
Also, I have a bud who has a 5 speed from a 99 Heritage I can pick up cheap but will this tranny work with the mid 80's engine? What inner primary would I use?
Sorry for the long post but would sincerely appreciate any advice, comments, suggestions, etc.
Thanks,
Carl

In a after market frame you have several concerns with transmission as well as final drive.Certain frames have some offset to allow for bigger back tires and wont let a belt work due to the offset as well as wheel width. So you need to mock up the wheel before you worry about the drive.Personally I would keep my trans case and just add a baker 5 speed gear set If I had to have 5 speeds.I like my four speed due to the ratios myself on a lighter bike as I can usually wax big inch bikes stop light to stoplight. The kicker part needs to be thought about as well.As far as the engine it seems thunder mountains builds had engines stamped with thunder but I thought it also said mountain as well. They did this until the epa got picky on over 3 bike builds then they didnt care about the motor saying harley. They were engines thru harley anyway

Thanks for the response. I added a couple of engine pics for reference and should have indicated it was a softail frame. Frame appears to be completely stock. Bike is titled as a 98 so I assume the frame is a 98 model.
As for the tranny I'm not so concerned about the 4 speed vs. 5 speed but I absolutely want to get rid of the chain final drive and I thought going to a 5 speed with belt pully would be my easiest option. Not sure I would be comfortable going into the tranny itself.
Thanks for any additional info.

the engine serial number is odd as it would make you think it was a 103---------just due to the 103 v2 at the end.The frame appears to be a stock frame from wht I could see in the pictures butdont hold me to that as my phone has a small screen
edit-------------I miscounted the vin,it would take all of them to make the right amount of digits(9) for my state anyway

Year of the engine is irrelevant...anything from 1970-2006 will bolt on with correct parts. I would look for a 90-99 primary...least amount of headaches. I would also try to find a complete primary, that someone removed to install a belt drive...they constantly made small changes(like starter jackshaft)that makes mixing and matching parts a pain unless you know what your doing. If you post some more pics of your trans plate, mount, and rear of the frame, I can help you on what you need to go to a belt.
