Default '96 primary chain change- parts list?

Can anyone help me build a parts list for changing the primary, tensioner, and removing the mid-shifter shaft?

Obviously a primary gasket kit- cometic? They have part number 603-101
Then a primary inspection cover that's solid- JP cycles 6000250
What chain? Harley? JP sells diamond brand-- no idea on how many links I need
Clueless on tensioners- I see mentioned that I could get an automatic one?

Anything else? Do I need a puller or anything for the job? I have impact wrench to get clutch nut off.

I apologize if any of this in the service manual- mine is on order.

You are doing this to remove the mid-shifter from the primary....right? I would replace the belt just because of age...but unless the bike has a lot of miles on it, it highly unlikely that the chain needs to be replaced...chains that run in oil tend to last a very long time, AND your replacement chain is likely to not be as good as the one you are replacing. IF the chain is worn and indeed needs to be replaced...the sprockets need to be replaced also..IMO

Primary chains last for like, ever......I would avoid the auto tensioners and maybe replace the tension block if its badly grooved.

Thanks fellas- another poster had told me to change the chain- looks like bad advice. I plan to get the gaskets, drive belt, special plug, and primary chain inspection cover and do this over the holidays.

Do you have the 1 1/2in socket to get the clutch hub off?
Or the 1 3/8in socket for the compensating nut?
The swing arm bolts require a 1 1/8in socket.

Hope this helps.

Not a bad idea to replace all the seals you come across. Main shaft, shifter, IPS, and depending on condition the crank seal. How are the swing arm bearings?

Why would you take the swingarm off?

He said he wanted to change his drive belt.

To do that you have to back out the swing arm bolts and remove the cross bar.

I suggest just backing the swing arm bolts out just far enough to get out the cross bar but leave them in enough to keep the swing arm and other parts attached to the frame.

On a Dyna you just remove the shock and the belt comes off as long as you have the inner primary removed.
John Big advantage over the softails.

Default What brand gasket set for drive belt replacement?

You guys suggested the James Gasket set for the top end and they are flawless in operation so far. What gasket set(s) do I need to change my drive belt on my dyna fxdl? The outer primary gasket is practically new and *knock on wood* I do not have even a seep from any place so I would like to put her back together with the same result. Where to get them also please?
Would you guys be wary of putting a take off drive belt if the belt is less than 5 years old? Older?

My belt was severely damaged when the rear pulley bolts sheared.
