Don't complicate things, set the gap as I outlined in my earlier post and then, if the points plate is not upside down, you can set the pillar bolts in the centre of the slot and go from there, if you static time at the advance mark it is way easier to get a basic setting ready for start up because as you manually advance the points cam you can see how far out you are and whether its advanced or retarded....I am retarded but I know how to set points up on a Harley :-)

Another option/compromise. Works like points w/o metal to metal contact: Static timing is simple. Biggest trick nowadays is to find a good set of advance weights. It's called the Dyna S DS6.

Dual fire, simple technology. I recommend a 5 ohm coil for best longevity.

i want to set static timing. i looked in the inspections hole and rotated my tire till i found TDC line for my front cylinder, installed and gapped the points to .20, but when i placed the points in the nosecone i lined it up with the notch on the cam. i have read it is suppose to be on the small lobe on the cam piece when at TDC, but mine is not. my bike still will not fire up just turns over and over an over.

Also which side of the coil do i connect the points to? i checked with the ignition on both terminals on the coil they both (left side and right side) read 12.79 i thought only one should be hot till the bike is running..

anything would help thanks a bunch.

Matt
i changed my 96 fxsts to points last night for some of the same reasons. Slots in my adjustment plate were not in the right place so i made them longer,Trial and error till i got points to opposite side of front cam point and just opening. Sprung plate is close to cone wall. Dual fire 5 ohm coil, ign to top post and points to bottom. All seems ok (for now) running ok and revving fine. Ill go for a ride this afternoon and see if it pops and sputters or if i go back to electronic.
