There is an interesting (and long) oil filter article here.

It might be interesting, but ignore the callouts for the filters, he got all the harley filters wrong. Once I saw that, I considered the whole web page to be BS...

I just went through the same thing deciding on an oil filter. I have used Walmart Supertech for years but my Walmart quit carrying them. Not sure why. Went to the HD dealer and got a chrome one for 9.99. Not that bad of a price. Also, I put two quarts of oil in the bag and let the engine run without the filter and get the dirty oil out of the engine before topping it off. I've had no problems. Use a funnel to divert the oil into your bucket.

If you buy it the dealer take it out of the box before you leave. My local dealer had one long filter in stock, took it out and it was rusty around the weld inside. Went to Skip Fordyce and bought 2 nice shiny new ones for under $20.

Check out the neat little 3 armed oil filter wrench Cycle Gear sells. Made my last change take half as long as trying to use the damn strap wrench.

I don't get the bad reviews. It worked great for me.

Black 63805-80A
Chrome 63796-77A
Chrome 63813-90T (Extended Capacity)

If you have a Harley filter that is not one on the above, it's not a 30 micron.

They are available, and a decent dealer stocks the correct filter or they are available on line.

There are numerous threads that link to references citing the differences.
I think there is also a 63805-80T, long filter, black...I think....

I have an oil cooler on mine between the mount and the filter, so I have to buy the short filters, and have always gone with the black: I just pick up a couple at a time so I have them on the shelve. The bike has enough chrome on it.

Have the same set-up with a Jagg cooler.Thank's for the info. Will be using these filter's, from now on. Found em on-line for $8.99. Cheap insurance for a air cooled engine. Ride Safe,
Harold
