If you mean they have a point on the raised teeth instead of a flat top, then they are worn out. Check your rear sprocket as well.
To get the trans sprocket off I think you need a 1&7/8ths socket that is 6 inches deep. Go buy an impact socket, cut it in half & weld a piece of pipe in between the cut to lengthen it. Then grind the face of the socket flat so it grabs the nut fully!

I just went through the exact same thing a couple months back on my 1988 FLHS. It's the first time a wrench has been laid on the engine or transmission in 25 years and 46,000 miles other than just regular maintenance. My belt had been running for many years with a couple small rock holes in the middle of the belt, but I noticed the side was starting to split, so it was time to change!
Replace EVERYTHING, the front and rear sprockets and the the fitch gear. They have made changes from the original design on the transmssion sprocket with a better keeper design for the nut from backing off, it should come with the new sprocket.
I used a Andrews fith gear and it too came with the new bearing and seal, you do NOT have the take the transmssion out, pull evertything straight out from the other side of the primary. It's an easy job and you will be glad that you did.
My belt and sprockers came from Harley, and as I said the fifth gear came from Andrews.
You will probably want to get a new primary gasket, top transmission cover gasket and the transmission side cover gasket and a couple quarts of trans/primary lubricant.
Approx cost: rear sprocket (32tooth) $220, trans sprocket $80 Belt $200, fifth gear $127 oil $19 per quart.
One other suggestion, if your clutch has any age to it, replace it as well while you have the side cover off. I paid maybe $35.00 for my FLHS.
