Default EVO Oil pressure

Ok, first bike(94 Ultra)with an oil pressure gauge! 2nd EVO but no gauge before. Service manual says normal pressure is 12 - 35 at operating temp at about 2000 rpms. My pressure starts with the gauge pegged at 40+ and once the bike is warm, settles at 20 going up to around 30 at different RPMs. This seems right within specs. BUT, I keep reading about the pressure on anevo being sooooo low...

Think I'll cover the gauge

A lot of smarter folk around here will tell you that it's Volume, not pressure on the EVOs. Mine is a 96 E Glide Classic and the wife's is a converted 01 TCE Glide Classic. In a thread from last year I worried about Light ON and no pressurein a way too hottraffic jam. Look up Oil Coolers, Evo Oil Pressure, etc.Start with these maybe.

Sounds as if your oil made be old, at start up that high, or a not satisfactory grade or viscosity for you area. Just a thought.

Low pressure for extended periods won't lube the upper end and then, you do have problems.

Thanks, pretty much all the threads I've read talk about low pressure. I don't have that problem at all however, most of the low pressure is reported during hot days. Since it is winter here in NC and the warmest its been since I bought the bike has probably been 75 - 80 and most of the riding lately has been closer to 45 or so, that sure isn't a problem. Honestly it is right within the specs from the service manual so I'm not too worried. Just never had a gauge before so never even bothered to think about it!

From what I found in the shop manual, the pressure is developed to put oil in the lifters and rockers first. The lower end get lubed almost last. There are relief spring replacements for the oil pump to help with low pressure. There is an oil lifter screen located in the cam chest (right side) near the lifter blocks. It is under the large slot screw on top. It has a brass screen located under screw. You might check that to see if it pluggedall. You don't have to change the oil to check it out. Careful of the o ring.

Good luck on your Road Sofa. Ride safe, often, and in good company.

The last thing that get's oil in the EVO is the oil filter then the tank. I've seen my 93 EVO go to 0 psi in a traffic jam downtown chicago during 90 degree heat. As long as the motor isn't making lifter noise, you're okay. It's still lubing the important stuff.

The OP guage is like wearing a heart monitor, just another thing in life to worry about. The bike will let you know when the pressure is too low. Remove the damn thing and ride. My .02.

Old Harley saying , Never Put an Oil Pressure Gage on it's just going to give you something to worry about.

Thanks all. Just to be clear, my pressure is NOT low. If anything I'd be concerned that it is higher than all these threads I read aboutEVO's beingso low. Maybe whenthe weather warms up, I'll seea little of that. Up to now, it has never been below 20 psi. I'm not really concerned. It isn't great to see the gauge pegged at 40+ when I first start but as soon as the bike is warm, it is right where the book says it should be, 20 - 30/35.

Really I guess what I was saying was the stinking gauge just gives me something to worry about that I've never had before! A small piece of duct tape will solve that problem.....

Thanks again!

My '94 does the same unless I'm sitting in traffic. Then it drops to around 10 PSI.

Thanks! Makes me feel better. I have been fortunate enough that I have not yet had to sit in trafficso I haven't seen that drop yet. I'm sure my day will come...
