Has anyone ever saw a VOES stuck "on"? I don't know if it is possible, but if it were stuck on then the engine timing would be advanced all the time, right? And wouldn't that cause hard starting problems and idle and low rpm problems?

What would be the best way to check if it is on? Measuring between ground and the voes should be open for "off" and short for "on" or advanced, right?

I don't have a vaccuum pump but I just put a long hose on it and check it's switching with a meter while applying gental suction..not the best way..

Check out this thread, some good links that explain it well..

Take the carb back apart, and note how the collar above the emulsifier tube was installed, the one that the needle passes through at the bottom of the throat. Make sure it is installed correctly.

To check if voes is working properly I beleive you should get a response from the bike by simply pinching off the voes rubber hose.

Thanks..good info from that thread...especially this link:

http://www.wildwestcycle.com/f_voes.html

I measure my voes...it is open...with no engine running...which is normal according to that website.

(I measured between the purple/white stripe wire to ignition module and ground).

With engine running at idle, it is closed...it opens when I goose the throttle.

And if I disconnect the voes ground connection during idle (after warmed up) then the idle seems to drop a little as the voes circuit opens.

So it looks like it is working on my bike...not sure if it transitions at the correct pressure though.

...next step is carb.

I thought I might have a manifold leak but spraying the area didn't reveal any engine rpm changes.

As far as vacuum leak, are you referring to manifold or to the VOES?

If you nail it, be sure and post your fix.
My VOES should be alright - I was just checking it with a vacuum gauge.
Cleaned the idle ports again with compressed air. Became a bit better but not much. Then I put a 48 jet. Now it's almost alright (still tweaking the screw - it does not have pronounced response). So far the screw is somewhere around 3 turns, which sounds normal. But still, 48 jet in a stock motor sounds suspicious
So, I'm chewing on getting a 42 Mikuni "Easy Kit". Wondering where I can score them cheaper than Ebay...

Try replacing the seals between the manifold and the head.

No they are brand new. And I doubt I installed them both incorrectly - since both of the plugs look same lean...

I guess I had enough of this BS. It's barely alright now with 3 1/2 turns and 48(!) jet. Still very difficult to start and no idle when cold even on full choke.
A friend of mine suggests the carb is worn out in general - the slider has some play - not much but you can feel it with a finger. He claims it might be enough for air to go around the slider Which kinda explains why there is no problem elsewhere besides barely opened throttle.
So, I'm goin to go the Mikuni road then

Why not get a rebuild kit? Less expensive than a new carb and then you have the new carb learning curve.
