I have BT books back to 1941.
The FLT Part Catalog (99438-85) for 1984/85 has the lines and fittings inside the inner primary with oil feed lines on page 42 and still shows the oil lines and "T" used to route the oil to the inner primary. It says used on 1984/85. The Catalog (99438-86), Page 98 is for the 1984 Inner Primary. It also has the fittings inside the primary to route the oil on the chain. The next page shows the inner primary with just the oil feed for the Chain tentioner shoe (39990-65).

The part catalogs through 1990 still shows using the shoe (primary) with the oil line.

Ok guys.., points taken. As much as I want to move up to a dresser, not knowing the real condition of the bike, I think I'm keeping the Sporty for now. Just for the fact that I know my bike won't bugging me with deep pocket maintenance in the near future. And at this point, I just can't afford that.

Well, next time maybe the right time!

The bike is badass to say the least....as said the fairing is wrong for an FLT and it probably will need some TLC to get her right. But without a job or $$$ to play with, you made the right call, stay away from this one.

i would trade in a minute. a flt is worth more then a sporty.. you could swap the front end covers, and gastank with a roadking when you get some money, would be hard to tell the two apart.. most likely, the oil leak is something cheap. seal, hose.. some people just want something different, or they get body dysmorphic disorder on the model they have. they decide a bike is ugly or old or bad, and just want it gone. i just traded a 90 yamaha virago..for a 87 sportster with a brand new battery, tires, and tune up. sportbob tank, forward controls, s&s super E.. it had been in storage for 15 years. the guy said he got it from his brother in the 90's when he got in trouble and needed money, but he doesn't like harleys, yamahas ride better. you should never underestimate a trade offer before you check it out.. maybe he doesnt like old shovelheads, has always wanted a sportster??? i knew a guy that traded a like new superglide for a dirty 41 knuckle that sat in a coworkers grandpas basement for 30 years. who got the better deal there? depends on what each side wants, a lot of times it just works out both ways...
