With the correct tools, it's easy. Without, nearly impossible to do correctly.

+1 on the above! And you also need experience if your talking about valve seats and guides. Not for the untrained. That's me, so I take my heads to my local machine shop and have him measure, cut, lap and seat to HD spec. Then I put em back on the jugs.
Just sayin....

the last set of heads i had rebuilt was at a napa auto machine shop..cost me $45.. if you have a spring compressor there are only two valves to take apart in each head.you could lap the valves your self if you know how..if they need seats or guides or even measured to see if it needs them, that would take some experience

Without knowing what to look for or not having the tools or measuring equipment it is not worth bothering with. The heads may need guide work, valves ground, may even need seats replaced, all work needing a machine shop.

All You can do without specialised machines, huge knowledge and lots of experience, is to take them off the engine and pull the valves out. That`s it. From now on it`s machinists job. But it`s hard to find a good machinist who will know something about Harleys. Not all of the polish "head workshops" will do it good. There was a good specialist doing Harley somewhere near Bydgoszcz city, I`ll find out if he`s still in the business. I`m from PL, too.
