Dunlop D404, on a softtail?

Default Dunlop D404, on a softtail?

I have been using D402 MT90b16 tire, but there 50 bucks more than the D404 130/90 16. From what I can see, that should be the equivalent tire size, Is that correct? Has anyone tried a 140/90 on the rear?

I believe the difference between the 402 and the 404 is the side wall. The 402's have fiberglass plys and the 404's do not. But I'm not sure.

I am currently running a 140/90 Dunlop 491 elite 2. As far as I'm concerned it is a much better tire than the 402.
when I ran 402's I used to slip on the road paint and would wear out a rear tire at 8k.
The 491's don't slip on road paint and I have 7k miles on the rear tire with very little wear.

Cool, that's what I wanted to know, I wear a set of 402's out every year, and yes, they are slippery as hell. Now that I know the metric equivalent tire size, I can get some decent tires.

I'm not sure if the differance between the 130 and the 140 is worth the change but I know that I had to add a 1/8 in. spacer to my axel (don't know if the rim is bent or it is because of the tire width)
because 1/2 of the tire was rubbing on the lower belt guard.

I would only use the D404 if that was the only tire available. These are a cheap tire. Go to the Dunlop website.

Texas H/C,

Are you running them front and rear and how is the 491 in road snakes or seams?

Like Silver Ghost I run through a 402 every year and they were never that great on wet roads. Last year I tried a set of Metzlers and they work really well but are low profile plus I'm not sure they will wear anybetter than the 402s.

That's the other thing I wanted to know, I have no problem putting in a spacer for the 140/90, just wanted to know before hand, I realize you can only space out the rear pulley so far before you have to move the trany or space the trans sprocket. If it's only 1/8 or so, that should not be a big problem with alignment.

I had a 404 on my 99 Softail Custom, and it only lasted about 6,000 miles. I have 402's on the front and rear now with about 8,000 miles on them, and they look like they will go at least another 8,000. The 404 is only rated for lighter bikes.

I run the 130/90 front and the 140/90 rear. The only time they shift is when the road crew cut those parallel grooves in them and they don't shift very much. I have yet to get them to slip anywhere.

When I was first thinking about using them I found some cites that said the tire was supposed to last 16k. I'm not sure about that but I will find out.
