It won't set the world alight but it will help the motor breathe more easily.
these carbs came with a 42 pilot jet. Step it up to a 45 and install a Dynojet kit.

I have a 1995 FXSTC...It came with Screaming Eagle slipons,I bought a screaming eagle stage 1 air kit and put an EV27 cam in it and the difference to me was unbelievable...Plenty of low down grunt and in mid range(I don't ride fast)for passing cars etc it made a world of difference...I only ride at 60/70 mph so I don't know if it made much difference to top end...

Cheers...Sparra

K&N air filter , adjustable ignition and coil , Andrew ev27 cam , dynojet kit and some free flowing exhaust (not strait pipes). You won't be disappointed .

Let's go back to basics for a moment and go over why a stage 1 is worthwhile doing. When your 1998 bike was built it had to meet noise and exhaust emissions laws and for Harley to achieve this they fitted an airbox to reduce induction noise, also jetted the carb lean. The mufflers are very quiet, for obvious reasons, but less obvious is that the cams have very tame profiles and the ignition timing curves are retarded at low engine speeds.

So to get the best out of your bike, you should consider doing more than has been mentioned so far. You will find we are fans of the EV27 in here and many of us use them, including me when my bike was less modified than today, but an after-market ignition module will give further improvements, by providing smooth advance curves. An SE filter will replace the quiet airbox and let the motor breath better, but the carb will need to be rejetted, as already mentioned. Finally a set of after-market mufflers will help things at that end of the powertrain.

Having done all that, a competent tuning shop will give you the best results by optimising your setup. I am a recent convert!

One of my brothers rides a 2010 wg and I'll tell you what... stage 1 intake and exhaust, cams and heads, everything that can be done to the 96ci... dynas are just plain freaking FUN when they are tuned up. So ya, if I make it to your hemisphere, I'll take you up on the ride. Happy new year.
I rode a sportster one time and went and bought a Dyna after riding a number of imported bikes I have owned in the past.

Sportsters are fun! Dyna's as well!

I asked a simliar question to yours not too long ago and decided on the Andrews EV27 for the reasons many have listed above...one other minor thing to consider if your going to replace the cam spend $20 and replace the plastic breather gear with a metal breather gear. From what I've read metal filings may become embedded in the plastic gear causing undue wear.

Another one of my old threads... $5,000 or so later and I did pretty much everything to this engine. Haha. My little 80ci evo will destroy a stock 96ci. But I have the bike I wanted now.
