87' FXR Misfire/Coil Issues...?
Hey guys, wondering if you could help me. My 87' FXR has been cracking and popping under load, that is, it ticks over fine but when you get out there riding it starts to misfire. Further to recent advice I checked the voltage, about 12.6v with the ignition on and about 14.5v when running so I'm pretty sure it's charging, I checked all the wiring connections, they seem okay which has led me to thinking ti could be the coil on the way out.
How do i check to see if the coil is in good order...? I've been zapped any number of times over the years so I'm darn sure not going to fart about with it when running, that said, I'd appreciate any help or advice you have to offer.
Thanks.

FXR Coil Issues
I have an 87 FXR-SP and had the same issue some years ago. There is specs on what the coil should ohm out at but I don't remember off hand what they are. If you are getting 12.6/14.5V then your regulator is probably OK. Sometimes the coil needs to warm up before issues will appear. It is just a coil and if there is a break in the windings it may not appear until you get out on the road and run it for a while. Windings warm up, expand and then either separate or short out. I would just replace the coil. I got a Screaming Eagle high output and has been running fine. I keep having to replace stater relays though, Go figure! Hope this helps.

Start with the basics. Is the air filter clean or blocked? Is your fuel filter clear? I'm guessing air or carb related. Electrical stuff tends to go all the way when it goes. I had a VW Van once that would cut out on hot days while climbing hills. Sit for an hour and start it back up and go. Turned out the coil was overheating in the engine compartment and opening; then would would work when it cooled off. Put on a racing coil to fix it.
That is rare though I think for electrical/electronic stuff. Hope this helped in some way.
Oh, also are the spark plugs tight? Had my FLHS cutting out once and it turned out the front plug was finger loose.
