Default Stripped shifter pawl... How hard to pull tranny?

I need to pull the tranny on my 1996 FLHTCU to replace the shifter pawl. How hard is it to pull? Is it something I can do myself? I'm pretty decent with tools but have never done it before.

Depends what you mean by "pull"....you don't need to remove the tranny...just the internals...I have actually replaced a shifter pawl without removing the primary or fully dismantling the tranny but I wouldn't recommend it unless you really know what to do and how to do it.

Whip the primary drive and inner and outer covers off, pull the clutch release cover, gearbox top cover and the trapdoor. Slide the internals out just enough to get the pawl out, replace the pawl and stuff it all back together again...about 6-7 hours work.

I heard that the lever from a newer Twin Cam is much better and is a direct bolt-on. I don't know what years will retrofit or even what the improvement was.

Maybe someone else here might know.....

I've pulled the trap door off before and the counter shaft will then pull right out , but if your going to do it that way be sure to rePlace the big bearings in the trap door. Obviously you will still need to go in as far as pulling the
Inner cover and then you may as well replace all the seals. So saying all that you are much further ahead doing it the proper way which I ended up doing and Pulling everything including mainshaft.
