Default New Transmission

I have a '95 FLSTC with a transmission that is starting to show signs of wear. It has 121,500 miles on it so I guess it is time.

I was looking at either a Jims or a Baker and I was hoping to get some feed back from ya'll as most of the people on this website have far more knowledge than I have.

I was also trying to decide on a 5 or a 6 speed. The motor is stock except for a EV27 cam and a SE ignition.

Save your money and get an Ultima gear set. They are a lot cheaper than both of the above and just as good. It's a lot easier to put the gearset in than change out trannies. Hope this helps.

Are gear sets already assembled or are they something I have to put together myself?

All assembled, they take under three hours to install the first time after the old set is removed. You will need some specialty tools though. If your old gearset is ok you can sell it to offset the cost of the tools.

What "signs of wear" are you experiencing? I have 166,000 miles on mine, and would like to know what I should look for.

The other day when I was headed over to a benefit I got stuck behind a box truck and when I went to down shift she dropped two gears instead of one and after that the first two times I couldn't get her into neutral no matter how hard I tried. After the run she settled out and worked fine.

Also for a while now when I down shift from 5th to 4th and get on her I get a false neutral.

Other people I know have told me these are signs my transmission is wearing out.

You might just need to change the shifter pawl or drum/forks. Sounds like wear.

It sounds like you really know what you are talking about. In your opinion is this something someone with little mechanical experience can do or should I let someone who knows what they are doing repair it?

I have to admit transmissions have always intimidated me.

121,000 miles on a 5 speed...just broken in.

Check the shifter linkage for freedom of movement without any binding.

Check the shift lever at the transmission, make sure it is tight onto the shaft.

Make sure the shift lever springs back to it`s centered position.

Make sure clutch is adjusted properly.

If all of these are ok, you might need to adjust the shifter pawl.
