Thanks, Got my first Harley basket case when I was 13 and have been working on them since. Have had my own shop for over 40 years.

It isnt that hard to do the drum and forks if you have a manual and a little mechanical expertise. The pawl requires the gearset to be removed to replace it.

Some good advice here. I think I'd check the items Dan mentioned. The 5 speed is pretty durable, asking only for fluid changes when recommended.

You can replace all the tranny components without buying any special tools....just make them up. I have a 10 inch 3/4 threaded rod with an assortment of old gear races as spacers and big square washers plus a standard 2-jaw puller.....does me just fine :-) Access to a bench press will help if you don't have a massive vice (other than booze, drugs and broads)
