It sounds like you really know what you are talking about. In your opinion is this something someone with little mechanical experience can do or should I let someone who knows what they are doing repair it?
I have to admit transmissions have always intimidated me.

It isnt that hard to do the drum and forks if you have a manual and a little mechanical expertise. The pawl requires the gearset to be removed to replace it.

You can replace all the tranny components without buying any special tools....just make them up. I have a 10 inch 3/4 threaded rod with an assortment of old gear races as spacers and big square washers plus a standard 2-jaw puller.....does me just fine :-) Access to a bench press will help if you don't have a massive vice (other than booze, drugs and broads)
