Danny Gray Solo
A few shots of my '98 FLTRI with the Danny Gray Solo and without the TourPac.
If you are looking for a sleek solo, Danny Gray is hard to beat.
As far as this topic (EVO Road Glides)
You can't go wrong with a late EVO engine.
They are practically indestructable, they run way cooler than any of the Twin cams with none of the problems in the cam tensioner common to the TC engines (no tensioner required on a single cam)
Harley Davidson big twin engines ran perfectly well since 1936 with the advent of the first Overhead valve engines (EL/Knucleheads) using a single cam through 1998.
If its not broken don't fix it.
The Evolution engine is simply that, the Evolution of the knucklehead, Panhead then Shovelhead, OHV power plant.
each change brought slight improvements to an already great engine.
Perfection was reached with the 2nd generation EVO's (IMO).
Sloppy copyright practices allowed the EVO to be cloned by every aftermarket Co. in the country, along with more stringent EPA emmission standards prompted HD to develop a new engine.
Enter the TC88.
IMO not a good change, but that's my opinion. They have bored it, stroked it, this, that and the other from 88, 96 and now 103 all in the span of 12 years. I'm not totally anti TC I used to own one, I'm just a little partial to the EVO.
The EVO ran from 1985-1998 (some '84's & '99's) with 0 changes in the inherent design.
Twin cams run too hot, cost big bucks to make a lot of power and (my opinion) are not nearly as reliable as an EVO.
Anyone reading this thread interested in EVO's should not hesitate buying one.
They are the last of the best, and still sound like a Harley should. I know, I've owned 9 of them.
