I checked the compensator nut like you sugested and low and behold that was it!! it was so loose that i could turn it with my hands. Thankyou for all your help with this problem
You've just learned the primary lessen of dealing with older iron . Always check the big oblivious stuff first no matter if you think other wise 19 out of 20 times it's going to be the problem .
