New clutch, new problems!
Picked up an 86 FXR clutch off Craigslist and tried to install. Clutch slides up to inner primary and stops where it should but showing no threads on shaft. Like shaft is too short? Cannot put clutch nut on. Plus ring gear is way off the starter clutch. With solenoid in it is 1/4" from even touching the ring. A longer starter shaft will prevent the primary cover from going on. Anybody go any ideas? It's an 88 fxr but had a 41-84 clutch in it and wouldn't work.

Before I installed I checked the diagram to be sure all parts were there and all parts matched the 85-89 diagram. Only thing I can guess is the bearing may be the problem. It was eat up some like the old key may have broke. I will get another bearing and see. I'm only out 25 bucks on it and nothing seems broke. I bought a new clutch cable the old one didn't match the length the book called for. I wonder if that was the original problem? Wrong pull length.

Ok did some checking and may be screwed. They do not make an inner primary housing for my 88 FXR anymore. From what I have found 85-89 used a different primary inner case.So the new clutch won't work and neither will the old one. Anyone know if I can use one from another model? This is a custom built bike so another one might work. But don't know.

You definitely have a mish mash of parts , they did some goofy stuff from 84 to 89 with the primaries and clutch pacs they changed a few times just enough to screw you . 86 was different from the 88 in the center mounting hub , up side is you should be able to use your old center hub pressed into the later shell the guts are the same if I remember right . Some pics of both would help tremendously to help you .

My old one is an 84 clutch, totally different. My diagram shows 85-89 as the same parts #s. 1941-E84 is all same. The 84 had a ring with needle bearings the 86 has a smaller roller bearing in the center. Might just save up till winter and change the tranny shaft to splined and the clutch, starter, and primary to a 90 or later. Ought to push it out to the front yard so someone will rogue it. Let the insurance pay off the loan. LOL
