Ok to be clear everything you have both old and new look like the second diagram right ? If so part number 14 is the one you have to change out there are 2 different styles that should interchange in pre 89 hubs . If not your original is the older shovel 4 speed style , get a pic of the primary too please ,we'll get you sorted out .

No, my old one is on the left, new is on the right. PO put the old shovelhead style in the 88 bike. So I bought the other one. I had clutch adjusting problems and starter was eating up the ring gear. I would get a good adj. and crank it up and have no clutch. My Indy said the older clutch would not work in the bike. This is my inner primary.

Won't mix sorry you've got the older 4 speed setup and the new one is for the 5 sp . Comp sprocket spacing , inner primary & starter for a softtail model not the shorter FXR or rubber mount bikes is were your going now if you use the later pac . Bummer . You can resell that primary to re cope some cash those are getting hard to find for the 4 spds

I'm removing the older 4 spd clutch and putting in the newer style. But at this point I'm just about ready to sell the damn thing for parts in order to pay the loan off. There is no way anyone is gonna give me the payoff for a broke bike. I've been going thru this since Jan. when I bought it, been throwing money at it every time I touch it.

Just spoke to a mech. and it is the correct clutch, need an 85-89 primary. Or upgrade to an open primary with belt. Will keep y'all posted.

An `89 will not work, `88 was the last year for the separate starter solenoid mounted on the primary cover.

You need `85-`88.

You can use a later model part, but you would also need to change the starter.

Just did research on the cast numbers, gotta be an 88. All others are different, and no aftermarket parts are available. Hunting for one now.

Rob's does not have one. He's got one that lists for 86-90 FXR but 90 has 1 hole for the starter mine has 2 for solenoid also. Plus the transmission shaft changed. So I'm back at square one.
