1989 primary oil
Hope I can get some help and understanding. I have an 89 flht. When I drain the primary, and I supposto add any oil back in, or is it automatically set up to receive oil from the tank (Weeps in)? I have the clymer manual but it's a little confusing.
Second question, what kind of oil are you putting in the transmission?
Thanks for you help

Step 1: Buy the official HD Shop Manual for your bike. You can get them at a discount from the online dealers. Do not do anything until this step has been completed.
Step 2: The primary is a separate system. The oil recommended by the MoCo these days, since they stopped making the old stuff, is the same as the transmission oil. Many of us use ATF now. I use Mobil 1 ATF.
I use Mobil SHC630 in the trans. Otherwise, HD transmission fluid or any good gear oil is OK.

There would be no point to this forum if everybody bought the factory manual my Sporty factory manual has errors in it....has lots of cool info too as does my Dyna one....a good lavatory read when your kids run off with the **** mags

Those of us who have been around Harleys a long time have found the hard way that other brands of service manual are riddled with errors and omissions. That is why we chirp in and recommend newcomers to this forum, who have simple questions, that they buy the factory manual. It is simple advice, freely given, to save them money and time. If you buy the cheap ones, you will probably end up buying a real one!
