Question Primary Belt Drive Anyone?

Recently put a Rivera Primo Brute III Primary Belt Drive kit on my '91 FLHS to get rid of an oil leak at the inner primary cover to case area.

Tranny leak got on belt and took it out in the first 200 mi. Now have the tranny leak fixed and new belt and am happy with it other than the noise after about 1000 miles so far.

Have the stock outer primary cover on with vented inspection and Derby covers. ( Derby cover is actually just a mesh so very open)

Question is how many miles can I expect out of that primary belt assuming normal operation and no oil getting on it?

Also if you have one how do you like it?

Should last at least 30,000 miles if you don't run it too tight or too loose. I had one on my Sporty and took it off because there was a bad batch of belts that broke after like 1500 miles and the dealer couldn't and wouldn't guarrantee them after refunding me for the first one.

I had a primo setup years ago on a shovel FL I used to own. Ran it just like yours, with the vented covers. Over a year or 2 it broke twice on me, I said the hell with it and went back to a chain. I think the problem is that any oil vapor will ruin the belts. And in a semi enclosed primary you have alot of oily vapor and heat. Mine literally blew apart both times. And there was no fixing one of them on the side of the road. I think the open ones last alot longer

have one on my 90 fxstc, 14000 miles on it. no problems yet. people think how cool it looks, and sounds. i almost went with the closed belt but changed my mind at the last second to the open.

I had the brute III set up on my old evo before going with a BDL 3 inch open. It ran fine but I only put about 5000 miles on it. One thing you can do is look for a fully vented outer cover. Basically has a bunch of slots all in it.

Thanks for all the input, guys. I'll check into that fully vented primary cover. Pics of my primary ( assembled) are in my garage. Avatar shows a close up of it right after I had it put on.

I like the idea of a chain much better too for the primary drive. Just got sick of the dang oil leak. Now I find out there's an aftermarket gasket that supposedly seals that cracked primary area without changing anything else. Wish my wrench had been up on this technology.

3" or 4" Belts will last forever. Less than that, like the type designed for under the primary cover, are designed for only 12,000 miles. (It said so right in my instructions.)

Thanks, Stiggy! That's what I was looking for; a ballpark on when to replace it before it fails.
