Hey, another quick thought. Could I safely use an industrial heat gun to safely loosen the loctite that I am presuming to be on the threads of the comp nut without wrecking any seals?

No, Hess.

I wouldn't put heat on that. The Book doesn't say anything about Loctite on the compensating nut. It says 2 drops on the clutch nut. At least my book does. Doode, you need an official factory shop manual.

Anyway, you just need More Powar. An impact gun is Real Handy, or, like I said, I've done a few with muscle. Helps a whole lot to have the chain/sprockets locked tight. A turn buckle between the 2 sprockets' teeth works well and is cheap. Get a BIG cheater bar. Like 3-4' of pipe. Put the bike in 5th gear and get a friend to stand on the rear brake and help stabilize the bike while you're cranking on it.

Doc, I have the offischial manual, that's what i've been referring to all along. I've used a 1/2" impact and it isn't doing the job. I'm thinking my compressor doesn't have the volume of air required. (oh, and yes I can spell, been drinking a bunch lately due to 2nd wife telling me it's over)

im thinkin i wedged a wood shim between the rear brake lever & the frame to lock the back wheel in 5th, cant remember. looks like u got crash bars, ratchet strap the brake to that should lock er up. get a BIG LONG pipe n watch a cpl Rocky movies & give her hell man. and just cause its a 1/2" impact dont mean anything, alot of em are junk no matter how much air u put thru em.
Good Luck!!

I looked at the tools for taking that nut off in a tool store a few years ago. Nearly all the stuff I use is 3/8" drive, which I can identify with, have had for decades and feel happy with. The 1/2" drive socket didn't look up to the job, but the 3/4" looked man enough. But that's truck tool territory and I decided to leave well alone!

Best of luck shifting it and we feel for you and your domestic news.

Thanks for the further input guys! I hadn't thought of locking the brake (I don't know why not, it had been brought up before!). I'm bringing the 3/4 breaker bar home tonight and I'll keep you updated.

Take the bike off of the lift until you break the nut.

well, a 3/4 breaker bar, locking down the brake and jamming a wood shim in the sprocket, did the trick along with a 4' cheater. Thanks for advice, now I'll proceed on to fixing the stripped hole.
