I also have an 85FXWG. Try jumping battery straight to the bottom solenoid terminal. If that works then the problem is electrical rather than mechanical.

What year primary do you have? If you still have the 4 speed primary with the solenoid sticking out of it...sounds like the contacts are bad in the solenoid...usually you can take it apart and turn the disc over and get some more life out of it.
