rebuild

To install a set of pistons you need to get your cylinders rebored to match them, something best done by a Harley specialist. If you don't have a local engine shop that can do that sort of work well, you have a volunteer here who can answer all your questions and supply everything you need! Give him a call. Don't expect professionals to tell all their secrets on a public forum!

I read HD forums about every day, but I never post, so here goes. Scott is the MAN! Hillside rebuilt my engine and bottom end (along with other upgrades)last winter and kicked butt! Ended up with 90/90 and have loved it ever since. I put 16,000 miles on this year and the bike (Heritage Classic 1999) runs great. I couldn't be happier, in fact I haven't even told Scott how happy I am yet, but I have been planning on it. In fact, he still owes me a T-shirt which I will go back and claim someday. C'mon back to Batavia any time Scott.

[quote=98 FLHX;7834133]Yep-- in 2006 Scott at Hillside did a "longevity build" kit for me on the FLSTN when I was living in Singapore with his headwork at about 9.7/1 comp; Kibblwhite oversize valves w/3 angles, 30 thou cometic head gaskets and a Woods W6 cam; and I bolted on a S&S 'E' with a blended/matched intake manifold, a DTT ignition and a pair of Kromewerks HP+ slip ons with the OEM header pipes and OEM flat top pistons.
Every Sunday we would cross the border into Malaysia with 6-12 bikes and on a highway to nowhere I could run away from the 88" twinkies at the time.
When they caught up they would scratch thir heads and wonder how I could do that.
Still very happy with the build. Never put it on a dyno but conservatively estimate 80-85 HP and TQ, maybe a bit more.

Just finishing a rebuild of my '96 FXSTSB, front to rear, I started to just do a mild top end, but well I like to go at least to some extremes. After a trip from central Washington to Reno NV, over to Eureka CA, and back home I found my stock 80" motor was drinking about a quart of oil in 500 miles. The valve guide stem seal was torn, Instead of doing the port-flow thing I bought a set of screamin eagle heads from Manchester Harley for 749.00 and sold my heads on e-bay for 250.00 so the cost was a wash with a port and flow, went with KB pistons and took compression to 9.5:1 I hate knock. S&S roller Rockers, pushrods, and tappets. Replaced the wheel and neck Bearings for good measure then had to replace the primary chain and drive belt (bike has 50k on it). As stated above I don't want to do so much to the top end that I grenade the bottom. Running a Spyke AIS ignition and an Andrews EV-23 Cam I found I had no problem keeping up with the twin cam boys, and I was getting better MPG's on long trips. What I wanted was my reliability with enough power to get out of its own way or pass a semi on a hill with all my crap and old lady on board. We'll see how it all turns out in the weeks and months ahead. Hopefully another 50k before I have to do the bottom end and freshen the top!!!
Hope it helps, oh, I run an S&S Super "E" along with a black thunderheader.

Not trying to be a smarta$$ but your SE heads will need the ports cleaned up to get 90/90 with 10-1 80". The SE heads that have been on the market for awhile have .575 spring lift travel so you are also limited to cam selection because the heavy hitter cams start in the .585 lift.
I am not discrediting SE heads, I had a set and good for what they are intended for but when purchasing new for $650-$700 and another $300-$400 to get another level HP and accept a bigger cam, I don't think they are good dollar per HP money spent.
The origional question on what cam to use with those heads in stock form, the V-Thunder 3030 would be a good one. Keep in mind that everything must work together and it takes knowledge of people like Hillside and John Sachs to not guess. Boy, do I know John schooled me on stubborness, it's sometimes best to look dumb and listen, usually it is also cheaper in the long run.

The heads are at a local shop here were i buy some parts from. They are a customer he pulled off a motor they are in good shape and he said they are set up to were I can run pretty much any cam i wanted without any worry, but then again thats why im on this forum trying to figure out the best thing to do without going broke. They want $500 for the screaming eagle heads with all the valves already set up.
