With the ready availibility of parts and pieces here in the states, we don't normally look for "off label parts". However since the starters are made in japan, perhaps you should look at some of their smaller starters???

Is it a Nippo starter similar to what is used on later bikes?.....If so, you can easily cross reference an auto part that fits it. In the US, there are about 15 years worth of makes and models of cars that use the same starter clutch that will fit a later HD starter. The only difference is the price.....A little Googling should find you your answer.

I guess some people here in the states might not look for "off-label" parts, but savy ones wanting to save a pile of $$ often do...My Twin Cam is running SB Chevy lifters in her right now...LOL.

No the earlier starters where quite different the solenoid was separate from the starter and the starter clutch(bendix)is located on the jackshaft by the ringear as far as i know no parts are interchangable early to late
A 1988 FXR is the early style starter --- 1989 and later have the new style starter
