I ran a cooler with thermostat on my old 76 ironhead but not on my evo, I do notice the motor sounds great when the temperatures outside are down in the single digits. ( celcius)

thanks all fer yer replys!
Funny How Harley keeps bouncing back-n-forth, with this engine heat thing.
Back in the day, my '67 900 used to vapor lock and stall whenever I was in traffic, (rejet? what's a rejet? I don't need no stinkin' jet, I got a open pipe, LOUD, no airfilter cheap oil in the tank, clapped out chain and sprokets, but Bitchin' Harley)!
My '07 Ultra actually stalled a few times in traffic on that one ride in the heat, (you could feel the heat off the asphalt that day. I can't ever rememeber feeling that much heat, (the bike will shut off if themps get above 265 or so I was told) and parts of my body that shouldn't get hot were squeeling in a puddle of sweat, (at least I THINK it was sweat)!
My thoughts on a oil cooler,......
like large volume oil pans, "the more oil the better and if you can get the oil AWAY from the heat of the engine, all the better".
Although the good ones aren't cheap, a cooler can't hurt!
Joe
If you look through a catalog, no matter how tricked out yer bike is, you can always find at least 10 things it needs! That's the best part of owning a bike!

As this is the Evo section, we may not be up to speed on them new-fangled twinkies (it's just a fad, they'll pass.) But, an oil cooler and that cooling fan under the tank sound like what you need, Joe.

Get the oil cooler, you won't be disappointed. Spend a little more and get the Jagg 10 row low mount. I've been running one for four years, it does lower your oil temp very effectively. You'll find lots of folks on both side of the argument with lots of reasons why or why not. However, I look at it simply this way; less cumulitve heat exposure over the life of your engine and oil, less wear, longer life. Make your choice.

I used oil coolers on my shovelheads, even had a factory installed one on my '81 FXS, but never seemed to need one on either of my '85 Evos. Both seemed to top out at about 180 degrees on hot days.

My 1991 Evo Heritage needed an oil cooler, however my 1995 Evo Ultra didn't. On one hand I had a dipstick oil temp in the Heritage which told me the temps were in the 290/300 range sitting in traffic on a hot day. After the oil cooler the temps dropped down to 225. On the Evo Ultra I didn't have a oil temp guage so I never knew what the temperature was. Now my 2001 Twin Cam Ultra needed an oil cooler.
