New to me 92 softail needs tinkered. Ideas?

I was thinking... could there potentially be rust in the gas tank (or even the oil tank)? Having set for five years, if they weren't prepped properly, they could rust inside, couldn't they? Not sure what can be done about that though if they are rusted - but I sure wouldn't want any of that crap getting past the fuel filter into the carb.
